A Bunch about Lunch

As a San Pedro high student, I think that the food given to us is pretty good overall. I do think some foods are better than others, and there are a few items that I would never try.  Compared to other schools in the U.S. and around the world I would say LAUSD falls somewhere in the middle.

The best part of food service at school are the people who serve us.  They are kind and really work hard and care about making sure we all get enough to eat, especially our SPHS fearless food leader Armando Chico, a 51 year-old cafeteria manager who has been serving students food here for 13 years. He says that he ‘’loves giving food to the students.’’ Armando says that the food he serves ‘’is healthy’’ but one thing he doesn’t like is the layout or presentation of the food, for example some food has “too much dough.”

Asking a randomly selected 10 students showed that one out of ten student questioned liked the food provided at school. The other nine eat it just to eat, or don’t touch it at all. When asked why, most students replied, “…it doesn’t look appetizing,” or simply “it’s nasty.”

Some students questioned said they would love to have food trucks at school. Students also said they would rather spend money on the vending machines, than eat school food. When asked to choose what they liked most, some of the students liked certain foods including the salad, hot pockets, burritos and cheeseburgers.

The teachers I interviewed said that they were told that the food served was 100% farm fresh.  All the kids we talked to disagreed with the idea that the food was fresh, saying, “…the food looks microwaved after being frozen.”  With some research, I discovered LAUSD’s Good Food Purchasing Policy.  The policy directs tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds spent on institutional food to support five overarching values: local economies, environmental sustainability, fair labor practices, animal welfare, and healthy food. The policy was developed, with input from multiple stakeholders, by the Los Angeles Food Policy Council in 2012. Most teachers bring their lunch from home rather than eat the food served by the cafeteria.

Maybe Armando Chico is right as he is kind, “the presentation could be better.”
